General - What's in a name? Ask residents of Groveport and they'll tell you the history of a town. The area was originally two settlements, Wert's Grove and Rarey's Port. In the mid 1800's both settlements were growing at the same rate vying for the status of a town. As the two settlements grew together, representatives from both areas decided to get together and form a town, but the two groups could not decide on a name. Finally in an 1847 meeting, the local doctor proposed combining the two settlement names into the name Groveport. Upon the agreement of the settlers the town of Groveport came into being. Since that time Groveport has grown steadily, but remains small in comparison to many of Central Ohio's other suburbs. | |
