How to get a real estate license

What it takes to get a license:

  • To buy and sell real estate the State of Ohio requires that you have a real estate license. Most of our prospective agents commit to working with us, then obtain their license.
  • The State requires that you take 120 hours of classes. The hours are comprised of four classes. Principles and Practice and Real estate Law are 40 hours each while Finance and Appraisal are 20 hours each. Unless you are taking the class for a degree the only requirement is to pay attention, sit in the class and get a certificate when done.
  • The classes can be taken at Columbus State (287-2453) or  at Hondros community college, 1-888-hondros or  www.hondros.edu    Call either to learn about costs and scheduling. Hondros offers a more flexible schedule with evening, weekends and day classes available.

  • Once you complete the course work you are required to pass a test given by the State but you need to have a real estate broker sponsor you. All real estate companies have a broker.
  • If you pass the test you will need to become a member of the Columbus Board of Realtors.
  • The expenses to get this far include:

    -         The real estate classes and any necessary books.

    -         To improve their chances of passing many students buy study guides or attend test crammer classes.

    -         A fee to the State to take the test and possibly a fee to a testing center to administer the test.

    -         If you are working with a broker who is a member of The National Association of Realtors (NAR) you will be required to be a member too. Almost all brokers who practice residential real estate are member so the chances are almost 100% that you will be required to join. This can vary from location to location but budget around $900.

    -         Your broker may have additional expenses like business cards, desk fees, technology fees, etc.

You can easily spend around $2,000 before you even get started
